“Harmonia Universitatis” concerts to continue in the new academic year

The concert “180 years from Clara Schumann’s concerts in Tartu”, which will take place on 11 October at 18:00 in the university assembly hall, is a continuation of the concert series “Harmonia Universitatis”, which was born in cooperation between the University of Tartu and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre last academic year. The concert is free for all schoolchildren and students.

This year marks the 180th anniversary of Clara Schumann's concerts in Tartu. To commemorate this historic event, the concert “180 years from Clara Schumann's concerts in Tartu” in the University of Tartu assembly hall will feature distinguished Estonian piano artists of different generations, most of whom are also lecturers at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre – for example Ivari Ilja, Marko Martin, Mihkel Poll and Mati Mikalai. Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Frederyk Chopin, Ferenc Liszt, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Amy Beach will be performed.

Clara Schumann, who performed in the University of Tartu assembly hall in 1844, was considered one of the most outstanding musicians of her time. She gave three concerts in Tartu – in addition to the university’s assembly hall she also performed in the hall of the Ressource Society. In her concerts, she performed works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, her husband, who accompanied her on her concert tour. The presence of the Schumanns in Tartu was a major event, offering listeners an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the finest works of contemporary music. Clara Schumann praised Tartu as a city of education and artistic minds, although at the time she had to endure cold and modest conditions.

The concert on 11 October will star pianists Ivari Ilya, Age Juurikas, Kristi Kapten, Sten Lassmann, Marko Martin, Mati Mikalai, Mihkel Poll, Johan Randvere and Maksim Shchura. Among others, they will perform the same works with which Clara Schumann once enchanted the people of Tartu.

The concert is free for all schoolchildren and students. Tickets are available at Piletikeskus or on site. Students and schoolchildren have to download their free ticket at Piletikeskus. You are kindly asked to bring the document proving the discount.

Within the framework of the concert series “Harmonia Universitatis”, the students and lecturers of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre will take the audience on a musical voyage of discovery, offering both timeless classics and recent compositions by Estonian and foreign composers. The concert series has been compiled with the aim of offering South-Estonian audiences a memorable musical experience in the beautiful University of Tartu assembly hall.
